Intent

We want all children to embed knowledge in art and design over time so that they will develop their creativity and imagination by exploring the visual, tactile, sensory qualities of materials and processes, discuss their own work, and that of their peers by making references to artists that have inspired them.

Implementation

The curriculum is designed in a way to ensure that children learn new skills whilst revisiting ones previously learnt.

In order to support this, we have identified eight formal elements which make up a piece of art, which are developed progressively and sequentially throughout the year groups.

Our topics contain at least five lessons and are designed to be taught in consecutive order, with the exception of the ‘Skills’ and ‘Formal elements’ topics. These two topics feature within each of the year groups and develop the discrete skills and techniques of art, craft and design. Topics three and four will delve deeper, challenging each child to develop and use their skills learned previously.

The art curriculum will be monitored on a regular basis, audited when required; reviewed with an action plan to be implemented as a result.

Intended Impact

For the curriculum to have fostered an appreciation for art, the pupils will need to have developed a curiosity that will enable them to grow as educated citizens, appreciating the knowledge of the world around them and beyond their locality.

Children’s skills will have developed through well-planned sequential themes, enabling them to remember these skills throughout the curriculum. They will use and embed these skills throughout the sequenced topics and for their further educational experiences, as well as their aspirations for lifelong cultural experiences.

Each year group should have gained knowledge of the formal elements and how artists use these to form an image. They should develop an understanding of how to interpret works of art, whilst using oracy skills to articulate and justify their perspective.

It is our belief that this art curriculum will engage all children throughout the school, no matter what ability, whilst inspiring all to achieve through a coherently sequenced curriculum that will challenge children to become confident, competent artists.

Corpus Christi offers full coverage of the KS1 and KS2 Art & Design curriculum as well as incorporating SMSC development. We have categorised our content into five areas:
